How to Cook Brown Rice that Turns Out Perfectly

Pretty much everyone who knows how to cook white rice has the same problem with brown rice – it never seems to turn out right. Sometimes it ends up being too soggy, sometimes it is slightly burnt, and at other times the outside may be cooked but the inside may not.

cook brown riceLearning how to cook brown rice really isn’t difficult, but the first thing you need to understand is this: Brown rice is not like white rice.

Thinking of brown rice as ‘brown’ colored white rice is only going to get in your way. The same method that you use to cook white rice is not going to help you here, so you’re going to have to learn to start from scratch and understand how to cook brown rice.

Step 1: Measure Out the Brown Rice and Water

Measurements are important in brown rice and the recommended ratio of brown rice to water is 1 cup to 1.5 cups.

Just to be clear, that means that for every cup of brown rice you’re putting into the pot you should add one and a half cups of water. Before you actually measure this out you should rinse the rice in cold water while swirling it around to make sure it is clean.

Step 2: Boiling and Simmering the Brown Rice

Initially you should leave the lid off the pot and let the water boil. Once it has begun to boil however, put the lid on and reduce the heat to minimum as you let it simmer for about 20 minutes or so.

Try to ensure that the lid is on tight so that steam doesn’t escape from the pot. If you find that your lid is really loose, you might even want to wrap the top of the pot with aluminum foil before placing the lid on – just to be safe.

Step 3: Leaving the Brown Rice to Sit

After the 20 minute mark, take the pot off the heat completely and leave it to sit. Do not remove the lid while you do this.

During this period, the brown rice is going to ‘cook’ within the steam itself.

In general you should leave the rice for at least 10 minutes in this fashion, though you could even extend that as much as you like. The longer you leave it, the mushier it is going to get though, so if you like your rice fairly chewy just leave it 10 minutes, but if you’d like it softer than that – go ahead and leave it to sit for 30 minutes even!

Step 4: You can now Cook Brown Rice!

That is it. Now you have learnt how to cook brown rice. This isn’t really a ‘step’ to be honest, because all that remains is for you to sit back and enjoy the results of your labor.

As you can see, cooking brown rice really isn’t that difficult once you know what to do – and since it is healthier than white rice you might want to consider making it a daily part of your diet!
